Ceilings of glass and gold - Female careers in classical music
This contribution will discuss the career paths of instrumentalists with an emphasis on women in leading positions in classic music. The empirical part will survey several qualitative studies undertaken between 1998 and 2012 answering the question whether or not the situation has changed over the last 15 years or not.
Careers in classical music follow over all two patterns: First there are music ensembles where musicians work in a regulated environment with regular contracts and social benefits and second there is the free-lance market that comes with irregular incomes and all its uncertainties and financial insecurity. Be this as it may, in both areas gender plays a significant role. The history of marginalising women in classical music has been handed down over centuries up to the very day and has, as recent empirical studies suggest, hardly changed. It is that history that strengthens the glass ceiling since certain groups of instruments and hierarchical positions are commonly assigned to gender stereotypes that weigh more than formal training. Studies showed in the past twenty years that formal training has no impact on the financial situation while gender does. This explains that even tough women are well presented (in some disciplines even overrepresented) at music universities, they are underrepresented as well in leading positions, headcount and financial reward. Gender Mainstreaming policies have until now only a limited effect. Gender and ethnic stereotypes that shape professional identities still outweigh positive actions measures.
